yesterday I took my 2 kids to the cinema to see Nanny McFee, (very good film) then we walked through the town and came to a pet shop, now this is a good pet shop and they have changed and adapted to us piggy peoples requests for hay and no sawdust etc, when lo and behold a delightful little popcorning girl caught my eye, I rarely if ever buy from pet shops BUT she was so cute and mad so I brought her, she is now called Lupin after the lupin who died giving birth a few months ago , the lady also asked me if i would like a male black self, who no one wanted, silly question and would you believe he has made my dobby a delightful run mate I kept checking on them both, and could'nt find the little boy named floo, he was asleep half under dobby cuddled up together, I was worried about dobby being alone as he was too shy to mix with other older males but floo has brought out the soft side of him, will try to get some piccys, piggys are not too easy to come by here where i live so gave in and brought from a pet shop , am i really so naughty, well I did rescue floo he is only 9 weeks and lupin 7, think she knew the little boy (and girl) was going to good home with me thats why she gave him to me, I'm off to do some cleaning out and observing my two little darlings

I always feel sorry for pet shop piggies so thats why I have a few - particularly my little Pippin who I syringe fed when I first got her as she was so tiny for her age, I think she had been bullied by the two males she was with & wasn't getting enough food. She is still so tiny considering her age but is a lot healthier & happier now. It is better to adopt rescue piggies but sometimes you just fall in love with the little bundles of fluff. I'm sure little Lupin will be very happy with you Michelle. Liz

I know its hard not to fall for any piggy... its not their fault they are in a pet shop! But I still believe that setting foot in a pet shop is too much temptation... for me anyway... and don't see the point as I would not give them another penny of my money. They sell their 'livestock' to anyone who has the cash. And that cash goes back in to buy more to sell. Fueling the system.
I'm really happy for the piggys that they now have a nice home though... they sound sweet.

Cool... At the moment I have no piggies and am trying to learn more about them before I get one. Although, I have to say that all my pets, well, most of them have been rescue animals. And I also have to say, though, that it is very hard for me to walk past a pet shop and not want to buy a pet. However, I do so much wish to rescue a guinea pig. I really do. But have not found any rescues or shelters or adoption sites for I live in western australia. And that is sad. I may have to resort to settling eventually for a pet shop guinea piggie Signed Nina

I know many of the pet shop piggys come from breeders who no longer need them as they require certain standards etc for showing, (I think all piggys are beautiful, ) some of my piggys come from breeders in fact my beloved Henry was given to me by caroline a lovely rex breeder, she gives them to people like me rather then pet shops, plus where we live guinea pigs are not often if ever in the rescue centres, so unless I breed myself ( not always possible as my girls are either related or too old to breed) its hard for me to get hold of them, amazing as it seems, floo and lupin are doing fine although floo is no longer in with dobby, the little man was a bully so he is in with another boy who takes no nonsense and they are very happily settled, no fighting just a bit of butt sniffing to confirm whos boss
