One of my boys has very odd nails on his two front feet. When I first spotted this problem, I thought he had just trodden in a poop and it had dried on, but in actual fact, his inside nails are growing over the top of his feet! I keep his nails regularly trimmed, and none of my other boys have this problem. Has anybody else seen this before?
It is now really awkward to cut these particular nails because of how they are positioned. It doesn't seem to bother Milton, but I am worried about the long-term effects. Any advice out there would be appreciated.

Since I posted the first message, I've noticed that some of my other boys are starting to grow these weird extra nails. I've checked my Piglopedia but there is no mention in there. I wonder if it could be because they have too much calcium in their diet, or something??

Is it a callous or a spur? Like a cornflaky growth on the foot or has it been diagnosed as extra nails? If it is a callous or spur you carefully trim these off with scissors. i would get in contact with the Cambridge Cavy Trust as they are the experts and will be able to advise you on this and what you should do. If you google Cambridge Cavy Trust you will get their contact details. I'd personally be tempted to get them cut by a vet if they are particularly akward... but definately seek advice on the condition & what you can do.
I'd be really interested to hear how you get on... good luck!

I've finally found out what my boys have got growing on their feet - it's a condition called hyperkeratotic foot pads. Description as follows: "A piece of hard, dead skin is formed on the foot pad, looking like an extra toe. This is more commonly seen in older pigs on the front legs. Sometimes, the dead skin curls around. It can easily be clipped off, and, as it is dead, no blood vessels or nerves are present.".
I must admit I haven't yet tried to clip one off - Milton hates having his nails trimmed at the best of times! I'm pretty sure this is the right diagnosis though! Thanks for everyone who offered advice.
