Hi everyone, Just a quick question but I know piggies lose lots of hair (usually over our clothes) but do they actually have a time when they 'moult' properly? Its just that I have noticed Silky's coat seems to have gone really thin lately. It seems to have never been quite the same since she had her babies but that was over a year ago. I dont think its mites, they always have the best hay and none of my other piggies are affected. Any ideas??

I don't think piggies have a seasonal moult like horses and other animals. a bit of hair loss due to hormonal changes in pregancy is normal, but it should regrow by this stage. if she is scratching, it is most likely mites or a fungal infection. if she is not itchy, and the hair loss is on her sides, and symmetrical, it could be a hormonal problem like ovarian cysts. either way, a trip to the vets might not be a bad plan. hope her lovely fur grow back soon!

Hi Sheba, I've noticed my piggys loose small amounts of furr (and always have) but if you have noticed they are loosing more than normal or there is dandruff or other debris in the hair its worth checking out. I would have a quick check on www.gorgeousguinea.com if you have a look under identification you can just have a browse at other symptoms and see what you think. Best to catch these things early when maybe a bath with one of the shampoos, or if necissary and oil soak will see it off.

Took Silky and her hutch-mate Jasmine to the vets this morning who thinks it could be mites. They are both on the (good old) ivermectin. 9 drops each per week for 3 weeks. £17.50 which I didnt think too bad as the vet spent quite alot of time with them checking them both over and generally having a piggie chat! I have to go back in 3 weeks just for a check up.
