Hi guys! How's keeping the piggies cool going for everyone? I've got a gazebo over my piggies in the garden to keep them in the shade, and on really hot days I've been putting frozen water bottles wrapped in newspaper in their cage. They like to lie against them and keep cool. Any keeping piggies cool tips to share? Thanks! Love Gem.xXx

I got my 2 in the middle of the heat wave, i decided to keep them indoors and give them lots of floor time (although as they were new to the house they didnt move to much LOL).
Any tips would be great for the future as it the extreme heat did worry me.

Hi Gem, My piggies are in the garden in a gazebo too but i still found it quite warm in there and I too have been putting frozen water bottles in their hutches to keep them cool. I panicked when i read of a few piggies losing their lives due to the heat, apparantly the affects of heat stroke are extremely fast and hard to reverse. My tip is to wet a towel, wring it out and drape it on the front of the hutch, it cools the air and they can lay up against it, you can also put it on the inside so long as its trapped (to prevent any chewing) and not too wet. If you have a brick or piece of paving slab in their hutch you can wipe these with a damp cloth to cool it down, my pigs love to "chill" on their slabs. You can also make them "ice lollies" out of fruit; chop up sum pieces of their fave, put it in a plastic dish in approx 1" of water (make sure the water doesn't cover the fruit) and freeze overnight. Press it out of the dish and cut it into pieces or you can leave it whole. I've tried mine with a melon one and an apple one, the melon was their fave. For extra Vitamin C you can replace the water with freshly squeezed orange juice (saw this on the cutiecavies website). Niki x

I fell sorry for you. I am in Australia and a few months ago I was just as worried as you. Keep replacing the water, shave some ice in. The ice bottles work well, so do plates out of the freezer to sit on. I f they become very lethargic and look stressed, wipe some cool water on them. Lotsa luck!!
