I have a guinea pig that I got from the humane society 5 wks ago. She was at the Humane society for 2 wks. Her card said she was abandoned at the humane society. Well......She is VERY pregnant now-you can see and feel the babies in her stomach. My question is do I need to do anything for her? When will they be born? If mom is scared will she eat them? When do they wean?
And then I heard somthing about their hip bones fusing together?? What happens then? I cannot afford a vet visit or surgery. When csn I touch the babies??

Hi Delta,
If you can feel the babies moving then you usually have around 3 weeks (give or take a little). They tend to arrive in the early hours of the morning or dusk time, but I have seen babies born in the afternoon so the only real indication you might get is a grumpy sow, who's off her food and the hip bones will have parted to around an inch (2 finger width) This happens around 2 days before but again it could happen soon or even be longer.
You need to make sure she's getting plenty of fresh veg and food/water. Certain vegs are better for pregnant/lactating sows. I will check and get back to you....
Do you know how old your sow is roughly?

No clue. The shelter papers guessed that she was 2 yo. But they have been wrong about everything else:(
How will I be able to tell when her hipbones have parted? What are the chances that they are stillborn? It sees that everywhere I look there are tons of posts that they are stillborn:(

If she is 2 and never had a litter you will need to consult a vet/cavy savvy organisation as it won't happen naturally and won't have a happy ending. If you run your finger along her spine to the base of it you will feel 2 seperate bones no more than a few mill apart, when she is almost ready these should part and you will be able to place 1/2 fingers between the bones.
Where are you based in the UK?

No...I'm in Minnesota. The reason I adopted her was that I couldnt afford the pet store and the shelter pets supposedly healthy and *not* pregnant LOL. I can't afford a vet so I'm woried about her.

Hello delta, have you thought of contacting the shelter to ask their advice? they might be able to help examine her. I think she definately needs to see a vet if she is 2 and has not had a litter before as her hip bones will likely be fused and as Beks said the only way these piggys will be born is with help from a vet. Over here there are schemes for people who need vets but can't afford. Is there anything like that out there? If not you can usually make an arrangement with the vet to pay over a period of time. Ring around and ask. But please do get help for you piggy. Good luck- and please keep us informed.

Good luck with this Delta you need to seek veterinary asap regardless of the cost. You shouldn't have taken her on if you couldn't afford anything that could arise.... Sorry if this sounds harsh but it's a very big factor you must consider when taking on any type of pet.

Hi, Is there any news on your piggie giving birth yet... It is worrying if she is 2 yrs old which is too old for a first litter. Maybe she has had a litter before (that you dont know about) in this case, she would probably be fine and so would the babies. Babies can be born at any time - ours were born in the early evening (wow what a shock) Mummy pig came out looking for food and we heard little scurrying noises inside the sleeping box - guess what? Two baby boy piggies. I hope you have a happy ending like that
