I found this site after spending hours on the web trying to figure why my little piggy "Buckwheat" died this moring.... he was a healthy 1 yr. old until I had him neutered last Friday. I am so heartbroken and don't know what to do. Has this ever happened to anyone else?

So sorry to hear this has happened renep. I am thinking if you just had him nuetered he might have died from a post op infection? Did he have any symptoms such as weeping wound or loss of appetite. But it could have been some other problem, did you notice anything different with him?

Hi, He was neutered on Friday and wouldn't eat- so I brought him back on Monday and the vet thought it was perhaps because he was getting an infection. She told me to continue the antibiotics and gave me bupronex .19 ml to inject every 6-8 hours for pain. From what I can figure out I think that was 3 times the dose he should have had. iI can't ask the vet- she won't admit she made a mistake. Anyways, he wouldn't eat at all and started making funny sounds... I picked him up to hold him and comfort him and he just died. I feel silly but I can't stop crying. Thanks for talking to me.

Hi sorry to hear about little buckwheat - I'm not suprised you are upset! I think I would also start to feel just abit angry too. I would contact the vet again and ask for some answers. Maybe there has been a mistake, maybe not but at least you will know in your own mind what happened. It wont bring him back but it may give you peace of mind. Run free little buckwheat. Take care.

I think most of us are from the uk. Where are you from? Hope you are beginning to feel a little better. Its so sad what has happened to you, but I am sure Buckwheat would not want you to be so sad. It would be really great if at some point you did feel able to take this up with your vet, though I know it might be hard for you it might prevent other people and piggys having to go through the heart break you have. Welcome to the forums, hope you will be a regular!

Consider me a regular! I just need to practice navigating around the site now! I am from Connecticut. Very close to New York in the states. There isn't as much enthusiasm here for piggies so I am glad to have found your site. I spoke to a medical friend who believes that Buckwheat may have been dosed incorrectly- so I have decided to write the vet... I am too angry and upset to go in and speak to her myself but do not want this to happen to any one else. I still miss Buckwheat and still feel guilty, but am focusing on the three piggy sisters I just rescued from the local animal shelter. They are 2 years old and very shy. (Buckwheat was not. He would come up to me and let me pet him, he especially loved under the chin). Their previous owner kept them in a very small cage -with wire bottom and spent no time with them.. Where on the site can I find advice on how to get my girls more social? They seem so frightened.

Hi Rene I am sad to read about Buckwheat but obviously you did your best for him. I have two sows that were kept in the bottom of an aviary and arrived at a rescue half their body weight and full of lice/mites. The lady who ran the rescue had never had sows that were so terrified of everything. I have had them about a year now and they are still not what you would call confident but at least I can hold them now without them leaping out of my hands and off my lap. I think the key is in taking things at their pace and giving them lots of quiet/calm attention. I have 14 so mine have had to share the attention otherwise I think they would be better than they are. Good luck with the girls, thank goodness they have you now. Once again I'm sorry that you have lost Buckwheat, RIP Little Man.

Rene if you would like advice about making them more social that sounds like a great suggestion for another area on my actual website... I'm sure lots of people would find that useful. Will make a thread on here so I can collect everyones tips on this to help me! It will also help you I think. Great idea thanks. And Toni has posted some great advice to get us both started!
