Hi Everyone!
I'm new here. My name is Lisa and I am currently the owner of two male piggies Smokey & Woody, 2 female bunnies Lara & Bonnie and a male hamster, Flake.
At the moment I'm trying to bond Woody a 6 week old baby to my 2 year old adult smokey. I originally got Smokey with his identical brother Bandit as 8 week olds. Unfortunately, Bandit developed a tooth problem which my vet discovered and treated very quickly, but devastingly Bandit died a few hours after coming home from his treatment. I was very upset and very worried about Smokey as the brothers had been very close with Smokey being the less dominant. Anyway, after reading all the advice on this site, I got a rescue 6 week old piggy. It seems to be going very well at the moment. Smokey is tolerating the baby well, he is giving him the ocassional chase if he doesn't want him too near, but other than that it is the baby doing all the rumblestrutting! I've never seen Smokey rumblestrut. I'm not sure it will be a match made in heaven just yet, but can separate if things don't work out as planned. Anyway, just wanted to say this forum is very helpful and very relevant to learning and caring for piggies.

Hi everyone I got my first Piggie from the RSPCA 3 weeks ago His Name is Copper, I've been told his 2yrs old and also that he didn't get on with any other piggies they put him with So he lives on his own indoors. I plan to build a big C&C cage and get him a friend, if it doesn't work out I'll split the cage for them both ;D I think I recognize some of the piggies in your photo's, I'm "loppyju" as I have 2 French Lops (and a dog). I've already pick up some great info from the site and hope to chat loads soon x

Hi I am Lynsey, I have had piggies in the past but none presently. My sons 8 and soon to be 10, wish to add to our family with 2 piggies and therefore I am becoming a member to find out all the new ideas ,as I am sure I am rusty after all this time. We intend to have house guineas with an outdoor enclosed run area for nice days for them. We have decided that due to a house extention currently in progress that it is not right 'just now' however I felt that the boys could gather as much information as possible beforehand. So therefore any information always gratefully received,we are like sponges we will absorb it all Nice to 'meet you all'

Hello and welcome! No Dawn we don't mind people advertising their sites one bit. I just ask that you keep your 'ad' to a one line link at the bottom of your signiture and that any images in your signiture are very short, ideally only little piggy icons or small pictures. And for obvious reasons we don't allow posts saying 'come to my piggy forum' since this IS a piggy forum and perhaps its a little cheeky. But the link in siggys is fine.
Hi Lynsey great to hear you are doing your homework before adding to your family. I really recommend it! There is so ,uch to know that we all feel overwhelmed sometimes, so knowing you have put all the thought into it before getting your piggys really helps! And means they get the most out of their new home & you get the most out of them. Do you plan to adopt? Are you thinking boars or sows?
Also very impressed you will be keeping your piggys as house guineas... the only way they should be kept for me. I certainly wouldn't want mine in this cold with the fireworks etc tonight. And also on the news last night there was a story of some idiots strapping firworks to a dog and blowing it up. No outdoor pets are safe from those kind of evil people either!!! Keep us updated and let me know if I can help at all!!!

Hi Susie,
thanks for the welcome, I am undecided to be honest on boars or sows, the reason being I was always told that boars were likely to fight if put together (this was when I was younger) so I always had girl guineas, however I am leaning more towards having to boars now from having read some information about how great the bond together.
Yes its adopt all the way for us here, although I have to admit its hard when you see the guineas in the pet shop, but I have taught my kids that by buying the pet shop animals it will only make them buy in more and therefore the little ones waiting to be adopted in the rescue centres wont get a chance.. luckily they are cool kids and agree with me 100%.
Yes keeping in the house is the only way for us, they will be part of our family and therefore treated as such in everyway. I live in Cambs so am very near (I have just found out) to the cavy trust so this is of some great resource to us.
I do have a question about bedding, in my past I used shredded newspaper and hay,is that still ok? is there a better alternative? I have also read of people using fleece? but haven't found much reference to what it actually is, I assume layers of fleece to absorb the urine?
It may be a while before I get to post any pictures of our new family members, due to the comittments we have going on in the house, as I do not feel with the dust and noise that is around us it would be an ideal environment for two little adoptees, however when we do get them they will be with us for life and treated with the love and respect they deserve. That is guaranteed.

Its true that boys can be difficult to pair up/keep together so often people recommend sows... but personally I really prefer boars as pets as they are more tame and friendly with people. Though all guinea pigs are lovely pets. Bedding wise- my top 3 are in no particular order... Vet bed (this is the fleece you are talking about) but I found it hard to keep up with washing it & it kept jamming my machine. You can get it on ebay in bright colours like purple, blue, red. Soft flattened chopped straw- brand name Russel Rabbit (available from Wilkinsons stores) or Medibed (from equine suppliers in larger sacks) or the bedding I am using at the moment and is my personal favorite for cost, absorabancy & pig approval- Megazorb which i located by ringing all the equine/agricultural suppliers in the phone book. It costs me £5.50 for a huge sack & I get my hay at the same time. all of these have a thick layer of newspaper underneath and plenty of hay on top. I've done a run down of what I see as pro's and cons of the safe beddings I have tried on my site: www.susieandpigs.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/bedfeed.htmHope that helps!

hi, thanks for the reply, after posting my post today about bedding I found a link to your site in the housing area under a 'bedding' heading, that was very helpfull, and I have an equine yard just up the road, so I am sure I could find it there. I willgo and ask them next time I am flying by.

Hi! My name is Kari, and I also post at Wheekers. I'm 37, and a stay-at-home mom. My husband of 17 years is in the Air Force, and we have three daughters. Melanie is 16, Heather is 12, and Jenna is 7. I live in Oklahoma. I'm the proud mom of a 5 month old boar named Piglet. And Heather is the mom of a 5 month old boar named Copper. I'm new to raising guinea pigs (we've had the boys for about 6 weeks or so), so I don't know for sure what breed they are. I am pretty sure Piglet has some Abby in him because he has one whorl on his back. He's white with grey spots behind his eyes. Copper is brown with some red mixed in, and also a tiny bit of white. He is crested. Here is a picture of them giving each other a little kiss. They live in a newly built c&c cage in the computer room of our house. (which is where I spend the day LOL) They live side by side right now because they were in separate cages before, but they have always had playtime together with no problems. So fingers crossed that very soon the divider will come out. Ok, I think I've rambled on long enough. LOL Great forum! And very nice to "meet" you Susie. I've been learning a LOT from your website!
